SOCIAL CARE LOBBY DAY

IT'S TIME FOR ACTION ON SOCIAL CARE

TUESDAY 19TH JULY 2022

Houses of Parliament, Westminster, London, SW1A 0AA

Lobby day: 11:00-17:00

Event in the Attlee Suite: 14:00-17:00

We want hundreds of social care workers, providers and those who draw on social care to gather in Westminster to lobby MPs and Peers on Tuesday 19th July. We hope you can join us.

The FSCC SOCIAL CARE LOBBY DAYwill highlight the lack of capacity in the social care system and the fact that, even before the pandemic and the cost of living crisis hit, there were circa 110,000 vacancies in social care and now the gap is even deeper.  Some estimate that there are now up to 150,000 vacancies in social care. It is time to call on the Government to take immediate action and time for a fair deal for social care workers.

All of us will rely on the social care workforce at some point in our lives it is only right and fair that we care for those who care. The FSCC need your support. The FSCC SOCIAL CARE LOBBY DAY will give a massive shout out for all those who work in social care – the forgotten frontline.  We are calling on the Government to tackle the recruitment and retention emergency in social care provision.  We want MPs and Peers to hear your concerns, true stories and to get the message that:

Despite Government promises, the  Adult Social Care White Paper and reforms in the Build Back Better Plan  - Social Care is definitely NOT ‘FIXED’ or ‘DONE’

DON'T MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY TO

We need Government to get Social Care DONE. The FSCC SOCIAL CARE LOBBY DAY is about hearing true stories about the problems caused by the lack of capacity in the social care system.  The fact that, even before the pandemic and the cost of living crisis hit, there were circa 110,000 vacancies in social care and now the gap is even deeper is of concern to us all.  Some estimate that there are now upwards of 150,000 vacancies in social care. It’s time to call on the Government to take immediate action and time for a fair deal for social care workers.

WHY ARE WE LOBBYING PARLIAMENT?

The FSCC want to raise the profile of the crisis in Social Care and win and build support for our core aims:

Parity of esteem for the social care sector with the NHS: if social care is to improve and increase health and wellbeing outcomes, the social care service must no longer be treated as the ‘forgotten frontline’

• A comprehensive social care workforce strategy designed to improve skills, training and professionalism, and improve pay and conditions for social care workers

• A substantial and immediate funding boost for social care and, in the longer term, a social care funding solution that is both equitable and sustainable

We want MPs and Peers to support our pledges and put pressure on the Government to FIX Social Care.

We want Government to take immediate action to:

  • Support a Social Care People Plan to give national shape and recognition to the sector. The FSCC drafted A Social Care People Plan Framework signed off by 26 social care sector organisations and leaders last year

  • Increase social carers’ pay to at least the Real Living Wage. Lifting all paid carers to the level of the Real Living Wage (£9.90/£11.05 in London) and fully funding the 2023 costs of new care assessments is necessary NOW and also to avert a winter crisis

  • Give the Social Care workforce an emergency funding boost to help support the NHS to deliver improved health and care. Health and Social Care are inextricably linked.  The Government’s ICS integration agenda relies on bridging the gap in social care. By committing to the funding needed for social care, the economy WINS. The nation’s health and wellbeing increases and the prospect of a winter crisis and the human and real costs to the NHS reduces

  • Support calls for a joint Committee Inquiry or Royal Commission into Social Care 2030: Opportunities and Challenges

WHAT DO WE WANT?

SOCIAL CARE LOBBY DAY TOOLKIT

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?

Help us get the message across on 19th JULY.

There are lots of ways you can show your support:

1. WRITE TO YOUR MP AND GET A MEETING

Use the template letter here and send to your MP and other Parliamentarians and Peers.

If you don’t know who your MP is – please click here and insert your postcode.

PLEASE USE LETTER TEMPLATE

Just insert the name of your MP and insert your signature/s and your reply email and/or postal address.  You can send this letter as an individual or from a group or organisation – but make sure your postcode is in the MP’s constituency. The aim is for you to secure a 1-2-1 meeting with your MP and get them to show their support for the FSCC Social Care Lobby Day asks and actions.  You can personalise it and also add your story.

2.  TELL US YOUR STORY

We want to gather hundreds of true “stories” from those who work in OR draw on social care, about the issues they are facing.  The stories should represent your personal story/experience/perspective on what’s happening in social care and/or stories from your organisation about the pressures placed on the social care workforce and those who draw on social care.  Please speak out and tell MPs and Peers, what it’s truly like on the forgotten frontline.

Please send the FSCC short (circa 2minute or 300words) written, video or audio stories here or tweet them using the hashtag #PayFairforCare or #GetSocialCareDone and we will add them to our gallery here. These will be uploaded on to the FSCC website and also used at the Social Care Lobby Day on the 19th to highlight the real issues and crisis in Social Care.

3. PLEDGE YOUR SUPPORT

We want to get as many people as possible - including MPs, Peers and “celebrities” to show their support.  A simple action but we want to see 1000s of sign-ups to show how many people really care.

  • Pledge your support here

  • Send the Pledge Card to your MP and ask them to sign

  • Circulate and ask your members, colleagues, friends and family to show their support for social care

The Pledge card will be featured at the lobby day with MPs and Peers showing their support.

You can download here – or sign the pledge here

4.  SIGN OUR LETTER TO THE PRIME MINISTER

Tell the Prime Minister to #GetSocialCareDone

  • Please contact us here if you would like to add your name to our letter to the Prime Minister here

  • Ask your MP to sign-up and/or to send a letter to the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State for Health to support the FSCC’s pledges and key asks.

  • Circulate the link to the letter to others and encourage them to sign

This is a live action on the day and the more signatures we can get the better – so please share.

5. ASK YOUR MP TO TAKE ACTION ON SOCIAL CARE

When you lobby and meet your MP there a number of things you can ask them to do.  We want them to demonstrate their support our campaign to #GetSocialCareDone

  • Ask them to sign the pledge card

  • Write to the Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Health and Social Care

  • Sign our letter to the PM

  • Ask them to table a PQ and/or raise your concerns in Parliament

  • Send a Press Release to their local press demonstrating their support - see template here

6. GET THE MESSAGE OUT THERE

The FSCC Social Care Lobby Day is about making noise and making sure that Government gets the message.

The KEY MESSAGES we need to get across are:

  • Social Care matters to everyone and benefits everyone at some point in their lives – so #PayFair4Care

  • Social Care is NOT done or FIXED #GetSocialCareDone

  • Social Care is in CRISIS

  • Social Care workers are disproportionately affected by the cost-of-living crisis and are struggling to live on their pay

  • There is a social care emergency – upwards of 150,000 vacancies and rising

  • There is a chronic lack of capacity in the social care system – it was already in crisis before the pandemic and now it’s at tipping point

  • The retention and recruitment emergency must be addressed as a matter of urgency

  • Social Care workers need to be properly recognised and rewarded if we are to stop the churn in retention and recruitment vacancies

  • It’s time for a fair deal and fair pay - it’s time for action

  • A fully funded and long-term solution must be found to #FIXSOCIALCARE

  • It makes moral and economic sense to pay the REAL LIVING WAGE

  • Social Care workers pay and conditions should be on par with those in the NHS who do a similar job

  • Social Care needs to be FIXED and fit for purpose

  • Social Care can be fixed by social care workforce reform – It IS POSSIBLE and FAIR to pay the Real Living Wage across the sector #PayFair4Care

  • It is time for Government to act on Social Care – given the scale of the emergency the response is not enough

Please use these messages and #Hashtags - #FSCC #PayFairforCare #GetSocialCareDone #TimeForAction when lobbying your MP, sending letters or emails AND reference the Social Care Lobby Day via your social media channels and local media.  Help us raise the profile by retweeting and getting sign up for the PLEDGES, letter to the Prime Minister and ask your MP to Tweet their support via Facebook and video clips.  Please use the FSCC branding and Social Care Lobby Day branding and tweet and say, “I’m supporting the Social Care Lobby Day because INSERT A KEY MESSAGE” from the list above.

7.  SHOW YOU CARE FOR SOMEONE WHO CARES

Other than sign up to the FSCC Pledges and letter to the Prime Minister, we want as many people as possible to show they care for someone who cares.

We want to secure photo opportunities and a memorable and thought provoking image. If you are holding an event or session locally let us know here.

If you work in social care OR are someone who draws on social care please send us a photo for our “I CARE FOR SOMEONE WHO CARES” GALLERY on the FSCC Website.  Please send us a photograph of someone who is a social care worker or of a person who is/or has been cared for.  “Selfies” and other photographs can go on our gallery. The more photos the better and also can accompany YOUR STORY. Upload and send here.

Please bring a copy of the photograph on the day – for use in a photo opportunity.  We want to get the message across that Social Care impacts on everyone at some point in their lives.
